100 Years and Counting

The 6th February 2018 to the date marks the 100 year anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave some women over 30 and men over 21 the right to vote. It was a momentous day and a lifechanging act, one that was only passed because of the dedication and perseverance of the women’s suffragette and suffragist movements.

To honour the date, Channel 4’s in-house agency 4Creative made a film celebrating the achievements of women over the last 100 years. Through a series of archive videos and historic footage, the film demonstrates these achievements, while the powerful, contradictory voiceover outlines all the things that women could not, and cannot, possibly ever do.

From going into space to becoming Prime Minister or reading the news; from Vivienne Westwood’s fashion to the England women’s football team’s goals and Kathrine Switzer’s record breaking marathon run, women have come along way in the last 100 years. But Channel 4 wants us to remember that it’s not enough; there are still steps to be made. It may be 100 years, but we’re still counting.

The broadcaster has also enlisted the help of three women born in 1918 to take over the continuity mic on the channel throughout this week. Millie, Beattie and Margaret share their experiences of being a woman over the last 100 years while also introducing the programmes which include the Film 4-backed, award winning film Suffragette.
